Nutrition for Learning Launches New Fundraising Initiative
Local charity raising funds for school nutrition program and increases awareness about food instability amongst youth
AYR, ON – November 25 marked the kick-off of "Five Dollar Fridays," a new fundraising initiative from Nutrition for Learning. This long-established registered charity has offered universal access student nutrition programs in schools across Waterloo Region since 1997. Their healthy food programs impact the physical, cognitive, behavioral, and academic needs of children and youth in our community.
According to Interim Executive Director, Erin Moraghan, based on the first two months of the 2022/23 school year, the organization is trending to see an increase of over 50% in overall food costs for the program, due to rising overall food costs and increased demand amongst student. They're also trending toward a 20% increase in overall need. As economic concerns continue to rise for families right across Canada, they believe the increased need could become far greater.
"Food instability is increasing (with no end in sight) and it's disproportionally affecting our youth and their ability to succeed in the educational environment," adds Moraghan, who is also the organization's Director of Philanthropy. "Nutrition for Learning is — and has always been — dedicated to filling the gap."
To help offset the rising costs and increased need, Nutrition for Learning has launched a new fundraising program, Five Dollar Fridays. From now until January 6, this initiative will focus on helping people create impactful habits for the new year by making a one-time or monthly $5 donation. We are working hard to bring awareness to this fundraising initiative, as well as create meaningful conversation about food instability, how it affects our youth's ability to learn, and actions we can take as a society to assist our most vulnerable populations.
Moraghan is personally dedicated to creating meaningful conversation about food instability across the province and support youth during this difficult economic climate.
Erin Moraghan is currently available for interviews about Nutrition for Learning, Five Dollar Fridays, or the impact food instability is having on our youth in our region.
